STEVE’S TRINITY GUIDE SERVICE
What ?
The Best Salmon and
Steelhead fishing in Northern California. Just 4 ½ hours from the bay area the Trinity River can seem like you’re
on an adventure thousands of miles away. If it’s Steelhead on a fly rod or king Salmon or steelhead on conventional
gear we do it. Our guides are all locals with over 20 years experience fishing the Trinity.
Where ?
The Trinity
River is located in Northwest California 40 miles west of interstate 5 on highway 299 west. The old stagecoach town of Weaverville
attracts many with a flair for antiques, gold mining, whitewater rafting and a touch of the “old west”. Junction
City is 8 miles west of Weaverville on highway 299. When you leave the interstate slow down and enjoy Trinity County, one
of California’s best kept secrets. The half million acre Trinity Alps Wilderness Area can be seen from highway 299 looking
north and the crystal clear Trinity River flows along the highway for miles.
HOW ?
The Trinity River is
fished from custom built Fish Rite drift boats, which transform easily from conventional to fly fishing. Our boat was custom
built to fish the Trinity River right down to the Realtree HD camouflage paint for stealthy presentations during low clear
conditions. In 2005 we added a 14’ Vanguard self bailing raft to our fleet, the main purpose for this boat is fly fishing
during low flows and accessing areas drift boats cant safely drift.
When ?
Trinity River fishing starts with our spring run Salmon season
in June. July and August are the best months for these big king (Chinook) Salmon. Back trolling plugs or back bouncing Roe
are proven methods for fishing these beauties. September is when our fall run King Salmon arrive followed closely by our fall
Steelhead and a fall run of Coho Salmon. The Trinity also has a nice Brown trout population we can target all year, some of
these guys get over 10 lbs. We fish for King Salmon until the first of November with October being the combo month where we
fish for Steelhead and Salmon on the same trip. The arrival of the Steelhead in October is the beginning of our fly fishing
season.
About the Trinity
The Trinity River is a pristine freestone river which is fed by many tributaries
from the Trinity Alps Wilderness. The tail waters flow from Lewiston Lake being fed by Trinity Lake. The Trinity River flow
release ranges from 300 cfs in winter to 11,000 cfs in spring and early summer. The Trinity River flows westerly approximately
100 miles through rugged canyons where it flows into the Klamath River at the town of Weitchpec. Forty miles further it flows
into the Pacific Ocean at Klamath Glen CA.
